INTRODUCTON
The
assignment given for this second part of semester is required to make a visit
to a preschool and try to detect as much as possible issues and give some
solutions to resolve it. This is such an adapted assignment for me since I am
on plan to open one on my own and it helped me a lot to learn some common
mistakes and issues could be done even by experienced preschool teachers.
So,
for this very special assignment I chooses a preschool which is above the level
of medium class. Due to request of the principal, whom was very kind enough to
let me observe her place for one week without the knowledge of her own staff
and boss, I changed the name of preschool. This is her very humble request due
to publicity issues, which I also felt fair enough. Yet she did promised me to
make necessary changes based on my report that I give, so that she can provide
a more conducive and healthy learning environment for the kids, also worthy
enough for the parent’s money paid.
INTRO OF PRESCHOOL
As
I mentioned earlier I have changed the preschool’s name from its original by
shorten its initial. This particular building is single storey which had 4
doors, but them only using one door by remaining the balance 3 as an emergency
exit.
The
preschool has four classrooms and a separate play room accommodate with all
types of play toys along with role play areas, such as kitchen and clinic.
During naptime, two of this four classrooms will be transformed by arranging
with the blue bed accordingly, and they also will separate children according
to their health condition basically if they needed for air conditioning or only
under fan. There are also 4 toilets, by 2 for children’s separated for boys and
girls, and 2 for adults separated by male and female. They have a shower
bathroom separately equipped with hot and cold shower, tooth brushing and also
area to keep all children’s toiletries neatly.
This
Tadika JK also has a kitchen, an office room, store room and also neatly arranged
locker for stack children’s belongings as well as teachers. At the entrance
there are also wall mounted shoe racks along with specially designed hooks to
stack umbrellas. Even though they have an indoor play room, still they do have
an outdoor playground equipped with normal stair and slide, swing and also
a few hula hoop, balls, bouncing balls
and also jumping animals figures.
Tadika
JK is been operated for past 3 years in this building and it is a branch of it’s
another Tadika JK somewhere nearby also. Currently this preschool has 6
teachers and one kitchen cum domestic helper.
CURRICULLUM
Tadika
JK’s curriculum is not based on government but it’s followed a different
private curriculum, which is also quite impressive and effective towards children’s
education. Tadika JK is offering both half day and full day programmes. Both
programmes are integrated with this private sector curriculum and they also
outsourced for art & craft and dance & music session. Even though they
have a limited sources for their craftwork but their curriculum is insisting on
usage of recycling materials which is quite interesting also. They have their
own branded text books, activity books, extra worksheets even flash cards which
is provided individually and the teachers are responsible to recording the
children’s reading abilities on this flash cards. This own branded materials
are have been designed for only three month period, which means both books and
flash cards must be mastered by children in three months, since they have this
special assessment period each three months. After the assessment teachers are
not allowed to use previous materials but will be given new set of books and
flash cards for both teacher and children. So the class schedule also will be
constructed by the HQ personnel which teachers are only have to implement it
accordingly, and which also will be changed after a three month period.
ENROLLMENTS
As
usual they have enrolments session twice a year, yet still parents do can enrol
their child at any moments. Currently the preschool has been enrolled by 68 children
aged from 4 to 6 years old for the first semester. They were hoping for more enrolments
in the second semester to make it to be 100 children. Out of 68 children enrolments
for the first semester, only 30 children are been registered for full fay
programme and the balance are to be back home by 1.00pm after had their lunch.
FOOD
MENU
Tadika
JK is providing breakfast, lunch and also evening treat for both teachers and
children. Based on my observation they do not have any particular or
standardised menu to follow by. It seems like daily menu is depends on the
kitchen helper or principal’s desires. By that I heard from a few children’s
stating that there are always bread and milk or milo only for breakfast and
evening treat. I also been told by the kitchen helper there will also be served
oat or rice porridge for morning 10am breakfast and lunch is always chicken
soup with two different type dish. This two dish is also always potato,
cauliflower, brinjal or mixed veggie of carrot and radish.
ISSUES
DETECTED & MY SOLUTION.
Ø ENVIRONMENT
As
from my observation, this tadika is situated at a most strategic area, and in a
very much suitable building. Yet still there are a few issues related since
there’s a wide river passing through which makes me notice a lot of mosquitoes
especially early morning and evening time and also during light rainy days. I
did notice a few holes along the wall that separated the building from the wide
river and those holes very more likely rat or snake holes. Which made me wonder
if this dangerous and disease spreading animals could enter the inside of
tadika since there is a hallway to do so. I also noticed there is one part of
this tadika which is not even been visited by the principal herself, which made
me worried. Resolving this few environment issues are totally involving a sum
of money which the head of tadika should concern about to do some renovation
work. Resolving this issues actually could prevent from some future
complications too.
Ø HYGIENE
Tadika
JK is not having much hygiene issues since the Indonesian maid is like super
lady, which she will always keep in and out clean. Even she was always washing
the toilets and showering areas before and after usage so frequently. This
areas also always dry which is avoiding slippery situation. Still there are a
few issues I concern about especially during the bathing time. The children are
required to undress and tied their towel and waiting at bathing area and they
needed to dress by themselves. Whereas during this whole process this children
were playing with their towels by lying it around, sitting on the floor which
is wet even the children are not aware of it. And this bathing session is
including all children aged from 3 to 6, whereas the small children are
sometime been lost in crowd. Even bathing also in grouping which sometimes
about 10 children be inside this one bathroom in a guidance of one maid, and a
teacher will be sitting outside to monitor. After bathing the teacher will wipe
and tied the towel back and just send the child to dress up by themselves. The
worst part is the wet towel will be kept inside the child’s bag to bring it
home, which made me think of two most likely possibilities. First of all smell
which could be produced by wet clothes since as what I saw this children will
roll the towel and dirty laundries together, so we can predict the smell
already. Secondly wet clothes can be a very suitable place for mosquitoes to
breed also to stay in for long hours. So I asked the principal why don’t they
dry out the towels and pass it over to the children, and she told me that they
never thought about it even none of the parents also did questioned it.
Wondering me about another hygiene issue also which confused me a lot.
The
children are required to bring their own meal boxes and cutleries to be used
during breakfast or even sometime in lunch hours too. I was astonished by this
requirement as if why should they bring on since the tadika themselves should
provide it, and I did asked about it. The answer was so dramatic that they
don’t enough plates and cutleries also not enough time to wash the dishes used
in breakfast to be used again at lunch hour or even at snack time. The children
also not even bothered to be guide by the teacher some basic eating manners
such as wash hands before and after eating and there are none napkins to be
used by the children. Yet about the meal boxes also I noticed some children are
not even bother to rinse it before kept it inside their bag, and seems like the
teachers are also not even concerning about it. Still made me wondering why
there are no question been raised by parents about this scenarios all the time?
Ø HUMAN
RESOURCE
Clearly
this tadika has to recruit more staffs to enhance their service level for
surely, if possible the management should consider about hiring one more
helper. Since one person cannot always perform all the task accordingly all by
alone with 68 children. Especially if it’s involving hygiene issues, since
early exposure of cleanliness is the most important factor. As what John Dewey
said “EDUCATION IS A PROCESS OF LIVING, NOT A PREPARATION OF FUTURE LIVING”.
So
it’s our duty to teach this children about living a healthy lifestyle by show
and guide them, not by ignoring them. So I strongly suggested a few action to
the principal, firstly to hire more teachers and domestic helpers. Secondly
tried to give them some in house training about dealing the hygiene issues that
arises starts from eating mannerism to bathing session. Since we are the role
models for the children.
Ø CUSTOMER
MANAGEMENT
Basically
I don’t encounter any issues that involving parents, or any complaints that I
heard been made by. But there are a few concern from the principal’s part that
is the parents are too much depending to the teachers, which I thought it’s
normal since that is what we are supposed to do with their children during
their time at the tadika. Apart that seems like the parents are so cooperative
since they are not even bothered about the wet dirty laundry and none washed
meal boxes inside the children bag.
Ø SAFETY
From
my point of view, there are none safety lack issues, since the building itself
is inside a fully guarded household area, whereas we must register our log in
and out accordingly. I did saw there are rounding of security guards and
policemen frequently. Yet the principal herself was so concerning about the
safety that they were always locking the main and inner door, and also been
installed CCTV in and out of tadika.
CONCLUSION
For
a quick roll up, they management should take some serious action towards the
issues they are facing right now. The even worst part is all the above issues
were not even seems like a problem from their point of view. Their very
unlikely answers of not enough staffs or not enough cutleries are made me
wondering are this people really doing their part in educational field or just
being here to generate money making business.
The
worst part is, because of this type of a few peoples only, those are really
willing to make changes in educational field are not even appreciated or even
bothered about.
Maybe
in some near time our government and none government bodies should do more
regular inspections to all preschools by not alarming the owners of preschool,
which could really surprise them by not only major yet minor issues also. The
quantity is more important than quality in all fields.
Education
and education providers should always be alert of their environment is
conducive, healthy and even productive enough to produce more little geniuses
whom will be our future leaders of world.

PENGENALAN
Kami
ingin menubuhkan sebuah tadika di kawasan berhampiran. Nama tadika kami ialah
The Little Genius. Bagi tujuan ini, kami telah memilih rumah ini ( rujuk gambar
1.0 ) sebagai premis kami.
1.1 FAKTOR PEMILIHAN
Premis
yang dipilih oleh kami merupakan sebuah rumah jenis semi – D, dua tingkat.
Lokasi terletaknya rumah ini sangat strategik kerana ia adalah kawasan
perumahan baru dan belum lagi dibuka tadika oleh sebarang pengusaha. Rumah ini
juga sewanya murah tetapi keluasan dalam dan luar rumahnya amat memuaskan.
Keluasan kawasan luarnya amat memudahkan kami merancang dengan lebih inovasi
untuk persekitaraan fizikal samada dalam ataupun luar.
1.2 PERSEKITARAAN FIZIKAL DALAM DAN LUAR
Persekitaraan
dalam rumah ini sangat luas yang meliputi dua tingkat. Tingkat bawah terdiri
daripada empat bilik, sebuah dapur dan dua tandas. Dimana kami telah merancang
untuk mengubahsuaikan empat bilik dan dua tandas tersebut, supaya bersesuaian
dengan kehendak kanak – kanak. Perancangan kami bagi tingkat pertama ini ialah tiga
bilik akan dijadikan sebagai bilik belajar, satu bilik sebagai bilik guru,
sekaligus tandas tersebut akan diubahsuaikan sebagai satu untuk kanak – kanak
dan lagi satu bagi warga guru. Tingkat dua pula terdiri daripada tiga bilik dan
sebuah tandas diikuti dengan pintu ke beranda luar. Dua bilik di tingkat dua
ini pula akan dijadikan bilik tidur kanak – kanak dan satu bilik sebagai bilik
kuarantin.
Bagi
kawasan luarnya pula kami telah merancang beberapa bahagian yang menarik,
sedangkan kami harus menceriakan sekaligus menggukan sepenuhnya kawasannya yang
luas. Kami telah merancang untuk mengkhususkan beberapa kawasan kepada sudut
permainan, sudut main pasir, sudut bermain air, sudut berkebun dan sudut seni
& kraf. Kami berupaya mewujudkan pelbagai sudut di kawasan luarnya kerana
sempadannya ialah tembok berbatu, bukannya pagar besi.
2.0 PERSEKITARAAN FIZIKAL
( LUAR )
Persekitaraan
rumah pilihan kami amatlah luas, memudahkan kami untuk merancang penubuhan
pelbagai jenis sudut yang kreatif dan menyeronokan bagi kanak – kanak. Justeru
itu, keselamatan kanak – kanak juga dipertimbangkan sebelum perancangan ini.
Tembok berbatu yang keliling rumah ini merupakan faktor utama bagi pemilihan
sudut – sudut ini. Ia kerana, guru tidak perlu risau akan kanak – kanak akan
hilang ataupun lari dari kawasan rumah. Kerisauan jatuh longkang jugak tidak
perlu, kerana tiada longkang di dalam sekeliling rumah. Cuma ada satu longkang
kecil dekat dengan sudut seni dan kraftangan yang akan ditutupi dengan besi
penutup longkang kelak. Tembok sekeliling rumah ini akan dicat dengan warna
biru diikuti dengan lukisan mural yang sesuai bagi kanak – kanak.
2.1 PINTU UTAMA
Pintu
utama rumah ini merupakan pagar jenis chrome yang berwarna putih. Pagar utama
ini boleh dibuka dua hala, iaitu dibuka sepenuhnya sekiranya hari hujan dan
ibubapa perlu meghantar kanak – kanak dengan pintu masuk, ataupun sebahagiannya
bagi kegunaan harian. Perjalanan dari pintu utama ke pintu masuk adalah diatas
jalan batu yang sedia ada, yang akan diceriakan dengan pasu – pasu bunga yang
disusun rapi pada bahagian kanan. Bahagian kiri jalan batu ini pula akan
disempadankan dengan pagar berplastik bagi mengelakkan kanak – kanak lari ke
sudut bermain. ( rujuk gambar rajah 2.0
)
2.2 SUDUT BERMAIN
Sudut
bermain ini akan disempadankan dengan pagar berplastik di kedua – dua belah,
bagi mengelakkan kanak – kanak berlari ke sudut lain. Kami telah merancang
untuk menyiapkan sudut ini dengan satu tempat bermain yang berlink, ( rujuk
gambar rajah 2.1 ) yang dibuat daripada gabungan kayu dan plastik. Jenis
peralatan permainan ini amat sesuai kerana ianya tiada sebarang bucu tajam
ataupun permukaan yang boleh mendatangkan kecederaan. Tambahannya kami juga
merancang untuk membeli alatan permainan seperti hoola hoop, bouncing ball,
jongkang jongkit dan bola. Lantai di kawasan ini akan ditutupi dengan rumput
palsu bagi mengelakkan sebarang gigitan serangga, jugak tidak mendatangkan
sebarang kecedaraan.
2.3 SUDUT MAIN PASIR
Sudut
main pasir kami, merupakan produk yang paling berinovatif. Sudut ini akan
dilengkapi dengan sebuah tangki besar yang diperbuat daripada kayu dan plastic.
Didalam tangka ini akan dipenuhkan dengan pasir dan juga alat permainan yang
boleh digunakan oleh kanak – kanak ketika bermain pasir. Kelebihan tangki ini
ialah ianya boleh ditutup dan hanya perlu dibuka ketika hendak menggunakanya.
Kami memilih tangki ini utamanya kerana kemudahannya yang boleh dibuka dan
ditutup. Kelebihan ini akan mengelakkan kanak – kanak daripada menceroboh
kawasan pasir ini tanpa kebenaran guru, sekaligus mereka tidak boleh bermain
sewenang – wenangnya. Tambahan pula kita tidak perlu risau cara menutupnya
sekiranya musim hujan. ( rujuk gambar rajah 2.2 )
2.3 SUDUT MAIN AIR
Sudut
main air kami amat menyeronokan kerana ianya bukan sekadar bermain air. Kami
memilih ‘inflatable swimming pool’ yang sangat berinovasi. Tempat bermain air
kami ini terdiri daripada beberapa peralatan bermain air dan warnanya sangat
cerah dan ceria. Ia juga ada tempat khas bagi bayi yang berumur 6 bulan keatas
juga boleh merasai air dan keseronokannya secara selamat. Tempat ini juga akan
diliputi air kuantiti air yang sangat rendah yang mengurangkan risiko lemas.
Ianya juga amat terhad yang memudahkan penyeliaan guru secara meluas. Paling
pentingnya, kami boleh mengeringkan dan melipatkan tempat bermain air, yang
jugak mengurangkan risiko pembiakan nyamuk mahupun sebarang hidupan lain
sekaligus mengelakkan kanak – kanak tertarik denganya. ( rujuk gambar rajah 2.3

2.4 SUDUT SENI DAN
KRAFTANGAN
Sudut
seni dan kraftangan amat menarik rekaannya. Sudut ini bertemakan alam sekitar,
dimana kami telah menyediakannya di luar kawasan yang lebih menyenagkan dan
juga memberi ilham. Kanak – kanak akan melukis, mewarna dan membina kraftangan
mereka dengan lebih bebas sambal menikmati alam sekitar yang nyaman dan bersih.
Guru pula kelak senang untuk mengatur dan membersihkan kawasan tersebut, juga
disediakan beberapa tali dengan penyepit pakaian untuk menyangkut dan
megeringkan bahan kerja kanak – kanak.
2.5 SUDUT BERKEBUN
Minat
kami terhadap alam sekitar yang hijau, mengilhamkan kewujudan sudut berkebun
ini. Di sudut kami, kanak – kanak berpeluang mengalami pengalaman berkebun
pelbagai jenis tanaman termasuk bunga – bunga, sayur – sayuran serta pokok
semaian. Perancangannya ialah sayur – sayuran yang ditanam, bila dah besar
kelak akan dipetik dan dimakan oleh kanak – kanak itu sendir. Pengalaman
sedemikian akan sentiasa memberikan semangat dan tenaga positif sekaligus
mengajar kanak – kanak hasil daripada usaha yang keras sentiasa menyenangkan.
Bagi tujuan ini, sudut ini akan dibahagikan kepada beberapa bahagian dengan
menggunakan kayu dan papan. Setiap bahagian akan dibahagikan kepada setiap
kumpulan kanak – kanak yang akan dibahagikan kelak. Setiap bahagian ini akan
disalurkan semua alatan berkebun yang boleh disusun rapi mengikut kumpulan
masing – masing di dalam kabinet yang diletakkan berhampiran sudut berkebun
ini. ( rujuk gambar 2.5 )
3.0 KESIMPULAN
Secara keseluruhannya,
cadangan ini telah direka setelah menitikberatkan beberapa aspek yang penting.
Keselamatan merupakan aspek yang paling utama kami telah timbangkan, kerana
kanak – kanak merupakan insan yang paling senang boleh dialami kemalangan
walaupun dijaga dengan rapi. Justeru itu, aspek kebersihan juga telah
dipertimbangkan ketika pemilihan peralatan dijalankan. Kebanyakkan peralatan
kami amat senang diatur, dibersih dan disimpan balik yang memudahkan semua
pihak termasuk kanak – kanak, guru dan jugak pembantu tadika.
