INTRODUCTION
Health is the most
important aspect of our life. Without a healthy body we can’t afford to do
anything even to utilize any wealth was been gain, unless to give a proper
medical treatment to redeem back the healthy body which was been missed.
Practicing a healthy lifestyle is the only way to gain a healthy body, but
without a proper knowledge or exposure it’s a tough job too. There are many
media or tool nowadays to gain knowledge or be up to date about healthy
lifestyle.
The
most popular and oldest media is the newspaper. Even though there are many
other media’s such magazines, electronic article and even android apps, yet
till now there are many people still prefer reading newspaper for their
satisfaction in gaining knowledge not only about lifestyle but other issues too
such as politics, entertainment etc.
In Malaysia due to its
diversity in culture and language, there are many newspapers currently in the
market. In this all newspaper there will be at least one article about healthy
lifestyle, either in monthly or weekly vise. This shows how concerning were our
countries newspaper regarding its readers healthy lifestyle.
To meet our assignment’s
topic given, which is to analyze the role play of newspapers in promoting
healthy lifestyle, we has decided to choose two main stream newspapers from
different languages, and our choice was The Star for English language and
Harian Metro for the Bahasa Malaysia. These two main stream newspapers were the
most popular among the readers. Its seems like this two newspapers were really
in concern about providing information to its readers regarding the ways and
important of leading a healthy lifestyle.
For the convenience of
this assignment's readers as well as us writers, we have divided the articles
from these two newspapers as per woman, man and kids. All this articles are
just been collected for a short period of 5 months as it from November 2014 to
March 2015. Hereinafter there will be more results about the analyze we did
from this newspaper’s articles regarding healthy lifestyle. Hopefully all of us
will be blessed with a healthy lifestyle.
THE STAR
The Star started its journey as a
regional newspaper based in Penang on 1971, which later went into national
circulation by 1976. Since then it has
showed a wide range of interest in entertaining its reader with information of
healthy lifestyle. The Star’s role in promoting healthy lifestyle among its
readers can be found through its published articles.
There have been a great numbers of
articles been published in different gender and age group. There are total of 30
on general group, 13 for children, 10 on men and 7 for women. There are total
of 14 articles on physical related diseases and 10 articles on educating its
readers about importance of having healthy lifestyle. There are also articles
focusing on food balance, medicine usage and treatment on generally divided
group. This general group is the biggest group which consists of all age group
and gender.
While for infants and toddlers group
there are 7 articles on physical diseases, 3 on medicine usage, 2 on type of
treatments and one on educating the importance of healthy lifestyle. Men group
readers has a total of 10 articles focusing more on physical related diseases
followed by diet, psychological, and educating readers on health issues.
Women’s articles are the least on list with 4 on physical diseases, 3 on
educating readers on pregnancy related information. This shows The Star was
more concerning educating its readers generally on healthy lifestyle rather
than focusing on only one group of age or gender.
The Star’s initiative in introducing
new treatment techniques and newly invented medical technology are worth for
appreciation, since its giving more choices to its readers. It’s also always
been exposing its readers with the side effects of some medicines which could
help its readers aware of symptoms, along with exposure of medicines abuse. Even
though the articles related to balanced diet was a very less, yet there are a
few contents explaining the good and bad habits of food intake which will lead
to in preventing some types of diseases mainly on diabetes and pregnancy. The
most articles are mainly promoting the sensitive issues of a human being
without any particular gender related. These types of articles are mainly will
be a helpful to some of its readers whom might be too shy in discussing with
others, primarily related to intimacy and intimate relationship.
Apparently we can know that The Star
is playing its role very effectively in promoting the healthy lifestyle among
its readers in a best way it could perform. Hopefully The Star will continue
promote health related issues in more effectively in future articles. Following
is a table and chart to picture out the whole summary of The Star’s role play in promoting healthy lifestyle.

THE HARIAN METRO
The
Harian Metro as the first ever launched afternoon edition Bahasa Malaysia
newspaper on 25th March 1991 is one of the subordinate of News
Straits Times (http://www.nstp.com.my/corporate-history/) . With its constantly
increasing circulation and readers, Harian Metro has never ever neglected its
readers to provide latest information regarding healthy lifestyle to its
readers.
Justifying
these facts is our analyzation that we did based on their articles in promoting
healthy lifestyles among the readers. Based on this analyzation, we have found
out that Harian Metro has published their health related articles more on
general gender or even age group, rather than focusing on one aspect. Harian
Metro has only published an amount of 4 articles related to men, 12 on women, 8
for infants & kids and 28 for general gender.
General
articles are more concerning on physical related issues such diseases as if
cancer, diabetes, epilepsy. There are also articles on allergy, dengue, arthritis
and even on infertility. Generally this type of health disorders will not
choose its prey, instead all this physical related diseases are more common,
which made The Harian Metro to publish more on this group. There are other
health related issues on general articles too, such as psychological, food, sexual
and medicines too.
Meanwhile
for women there are 9 articles about physical issues, which is more to breast
cancer and personal hygiene. There are articles about information on medicines
usage during breast feeding and also exposure on HPV vaccine for teenagers in
school. Whereas for infants and toddlers there are total of 7 physical related
articles and one on medicines usage. While for men there are only total of 4
articles, 3 on sexual organ related diseases and one on kidney failure. Summarize
the whole scenario, for the past 5 months Harian Metro has only focused on
publishing articles regarding none or partially cure able diseases, rather than
focusing on balanced diet, exercises, or more information on treatment methods.
Harian
Metro is very keen in exposing the preventive ways of the chronic diseases
which are non curable or partially curable. This is a very good effort in
promoting healthy lifestyle, since life without a disease is more worth than
leading a life in curing a disease which could be prevented by Harian Metro’s
readers. Harian Metro also always been considering its female readers since
most of its articles are very much related to women healthy lifestyle. It has
always been enhancing its role play in promoting most effective techniques in
solving female related health issues. Harian Metro also has a very impressive
way in explaining usage of medicines and its side effects, along with medicines
abuse. Harian Metro has always been very considering in promoting healthy
lifestyle among its loyal readers, since a healthy reader from any gender and
age group are the scaffolding of this community.

Based
to the above charts, we can understand that both The Star and Harian Metro have
been actively promoting healthy lifestyle within its general group readers. Yet
from the data also we can see that they are more particular in giving
information on physical related health issues as it, The Star at 14 articles
and Harian Metro at 10 articles. Both newspapers also very conservative in
educating their loyal readers about importance and preventing measures of
diseases, which they did by giving more information on medicine and health
education articles.
Based
on this analyzed data also, we can know both mainstream newspapers were been so
moderate in exposing their readers in healthy food diet or even good practice
of medicine intake. Whereas there are
none articles related to any cleanliness or even importance of good behavior
practice.
This
analyze was been done only for time span of 5 months, yet both newspapers has
failed to emphasize their readers on importance of cleanliness. Since clean
environment will always contribute on leading a healthy lifestyle. Hopefull in
future the all mainstream newspapers will reconsider in educating their readers
in more deeply about the importance of lead ing a healthy lifestyle.
